6 Steps To Building Your Etsy SEO Foundation

6 Steps To Building Your Etsy SEO Foundation

People will be searching for your products using Etsy similar to how they search for questions, directions, or anything else in a search engine.

There is a way to optimize your products so that they will be found easily by your potential customers.

Use these 6 steps to create a solid foundation for your etsy store to optimize your sales.

Use Google Keyword Planner

Keep your keywords very specific. There are tons of sites all over the internet and you need to focus your keywords both in the subjects and product descriptions in order to hypertarget and get visibility on Google.

If you are too broad, there’s no way your site will ever be indexed by Google or Etsy.

By taking the general keywords of the products you are selling along with the specifics and combining them in the keyword planner, you’ll get an idea of keywords you can actually rank for depending upon the competition.

Think of it like your product naming thesaurus that will give you a myriad of options on how to name your products with words that people actually search for.

What Are You Selling?

Your goal is to come up with 4-5 general/core keywords for your store sections that get tons of searches (according to Google Keyword Planner) and then specific ones for each of all of your products.

An example would be:

  • Funny baby clothes – General
  • Funny baby boots – Specific

Use Both Spellings Of Words

UK and American English sometimes spell the same words differently.

Since Etsy is global, make sure you hit on both of them for maximum exposure so you won’t leave any traffic on the table.

Check Etsy For Those Keywords

The competition on Google words won’t be the exact same as on Etsy.

The purpose of the Google search was to help you determine what people actually search when they’re looking for a product similar to yours.

By applying these keywords and then searching the competition on Etsy, you’ll know how fierce the actual competition on Etsy will be.

You’ll also want to see how many stars and rankings your competition has.

The more stars and ratings they have, the harder it will be for you to compete.

Renew your listings often

72.92% of the listings on the first page of Etsy search have been renewed within the last 7 days.

If you’re waiting 4 months for your listings to expire before you renew them than you’re missing out on a lot of traffic.

You can use tools like Etsy On Sale to schedule your listings to automatically renew.

We each of our listings around twice per month.

Fill Up The Descriptions

If you have a lot of relevant keywords you can use, then it’s worth filling up the titles and descriptions with as many as possible.

Adding descriptors like boy, girl, baby, babies, boys, girls, all of it will help because many people search in different ways.

You want to use the different alliterations and google keyword planner will help you be creative in what you’re trying to do.

Conclusion:

People are having success with Etsy and hard work will get you where you need to be.

Keep on trying and using the trial and error method to figure out what works and what doesn’t. If you give up, you automatically fail.

Remember.

This is a new venture for most of you and there are people out there trying to help. Good luck!

  1. I am not sure if you mean keys words like the name of your site or your product? That always confuses me! Can you clarify it more for me please?

    • Hey Glenda,

The keywords that we are referring to are those related to your product or niche that you use on your listing titles, tags, shop sections, etc. I hope this helps.

  2. Hi,

Thank you for these great tips I got in my email. I don’t clean my tags often but now I see I should. The many names for keywords are a great example as well. Thank you.

  3. Hi, ho do I check stars & ranking of my completion, and what does SEO stand for? Last question, do you mean once we figure out strong keywords for our items we are to also use those in the description as well as the title? Thanks so very much!! Dee

    • Hey Darleen,

When you go to another Etsy shop, you will see how many sales and reviews they got. For the ranking, we use craftcount.com to check it. About SEO, it means Search Engine Optimization; the process of getting traffic from search results.

Once you’ve find the keywords perfect for your products, you can use them as listing titles and tags. I hope these help.

  4. I feel like my head is swimming……I’m not business oriented and not computer literate either so I really have a lot to learn. Thank you so much for this and other articles I have been studying this morning. I truly appreciate your effort to help others.

  5. I would love to hear you tlk more about setting up your own website. Since I already have two that focus exclusively on original fine art work and portraits and don’t provide direct sales access, do you advise having one that would focus just on my prints and cards like I do with my Etsy shop and be more like an Etsy shop with easy direct sales?

    • Hey Phyllis,

We do recommend having a stand alone shop and we may discuss it more in-depth in the future. However, at this time, we are focused on Etsy. Thank you!

  6. Can you check to see my etsy web page to see what I need to do, just opened it this week! I sign up for your help a few weeks ago!
    The address is

    • Hey Barbara,

You are eligible for a Shop Review. Once you’re ready, you may submit a request by clicking the Shop Review button on top of the membership site.

  7. I wanted to mention that adding more keywords to my titles has definitely increased my sales this year, although that doesn’t mean I’m selling huge amounts. I also see that renewing a listing early sometimes helps but, in my case, i also get an occasional sale from a listing that’s been up quite a while and that I’ve almost decided is of no interest to anyone.
