Everyone’s on Pinterest these days and it is essential to garner as much exposure and attention from pins as possible in order to increase traffic to your site and increase sales.

Since Pinterest is based largely on user-generated or shared images, it is important that your pins go viral once you share them.

Many people have tried valiantly to share and generate interest from pins, only to find that these pins hardly gain any likes, followers, or gets re-pinned.

The key to creating viral pins is not just from having loads of pins or getting more followers to your pins.

An important aspect of creating viral pins is ensuring that your pins reach your target audience.

Here are 6 key points that are sure to get your pins spreading like wildfire.

 

Select Awesome Images

Since Pinterest relies on esthetics and appeal, the images you choose are critical to creating viral pins.

Several important points to remember when selecting a great picture for your pin includes choosing eye-catching images that contain bright colors.

Another feature of great images is having natural light.

Natural light not only brings out the best in almost any picture, but also allows the unique traits and features of any picture to stand out.

You should also experiment with images from different angles.

For example, a piece of cake does not always need to be shot from a wide angle to show the top design.

Cutting the pieces open and including utensils will make the cake look more appealing.

Likewise, a necklace might depict a much better outlook from a different angle.

Remember to take as many pictures as possible so you have a wide selection of images to choose from.

If your product has other aspects that are important, or if more than one angle turns out great, try creating collages of your pictures to appeal to a larger audience.

 

Create longer, taller images

One other unique way of showcasing a great product is to try taking the photograph vertically instead of horizontally.

This works especially well as your image will stand out on the Pinterest board and will take up more vertical space than other regular pictures.

Taller product images not only hold the majority of screen space and can block out competing products, these tall images also give your potential customer a better idea of what you are selling since they are better able to view the product.

Pinterest images in pins are restricted mostly in width rather than height. Take full advantage of this and try lengthening your product images.

 

“Rich” pins go viral faster

If you own an Etsy shop or Shopify website than you need to be using “Rich Pins”.

When you pin an item directly from your Etsy listing the Pin will have the items price, an Etsy badge, and a link straight back to your listing.

If you update the listing price it will also update the price on your Pin.

Rich Pins help your followers find your products/photos more easily.

If you put your item on sale all the people who have repinned it will be able to see that the listing is on sale too.

This can be very powerful for driving more orders with sales.

These pins enable potential customers to click directly into your site or store and speeds up the decision-making process when it comes to making purchases.

 

Keywords, keywords, keywords

Your best keywords should always be in the title of your Etsy listing, blog post, or a specific page of your website.

Use this title as the title of your pin.

You can research your ideal keywords using Google or in Etsy itself.

Review all suggested keywords before deciding on which ones to use, then test these keywords out on Pinterest to view search results.

 

Your description matters

In order to sell your products through great viral pins, you have to describe what you are selling.

Entice potential customers to your pins by adding a link in the description.

Make your description concise, ask questions, and upsell, upsell, upsell.

Your product description should contain specific keywords that are linked to your product.

It should also provide an accurate and appealing idea of how customers can benefit from buying and using the product, or get them thinking about what they will not be able to achieve if they did not invest in the product.

Great product descriptions effectively capture a customer’s attention so they want to click to view the product further.

 

Frequency matters

Since customers have to constantly scroll through thousands and thousands of pins, the best way to ensure that your pins are always in front of your potential customer is to pin as frequently as you can.

Similar pins are also encouraged as not everyone might be logged on scrolling through Pinterest each time you pin.

Remember, for pins to go viral, they have to be seen.

    Thank you for the information. When you say Rich Pins, what exactly do you mean? I pin my items from my Etsy shop directly on to my Pinterest boards. How are these different? My photos are very good.

      Rich Pins are Pins that include extra information right on the Pin itself. If you are pinning items from your Etsy shop directly, then you’re doing great.

  3. You talk about frequency. Should we be pinning one product multiple times? Or is it best to just pin it only once?

      We recommend pinning your product as frequently as you can because some people may not see your pin and have thousands of pins to scroll through.

    I am pinning directly from my Etsy shop. What I am asking you is about the pin including the price in a red box, which Charles showed yesterday. My pin does not appear that way , I am wondering why or how to get it like that.
