People will be searching for your products using Etsy similar to how they search for questions, directions, or anything else in a search engine.
There is a way to optimize your products so that they will be found easily by your potential customers.
Use these 6 steps to create a solid foundation for your Etsy store to optimize your sales.
1. Use Google Keyword Planner
Keep your keywords very specific. There are tons of sites all over the internet and you need to focus your keywords both in the subjects and product descriptions in order to hyper-target and get visibility on Google.
If you are too broad, there’s no way your site will ever be indexed by Google or Etsy.
By taking the general keywords of the products you are selling along with the specifics and combining them in the keyword planner, you’ll get an idea of keywords you can actually rank for depending upon the competition.
Think of it like your product naming thesaurus that will give you a myriad of options on how to name your products with words that people actually search for.
2. What Are You Selling?
Your goal is to come up with 4-5 general/core keywords for your store sections that get tons of searches (according to Google Keyword Planner) and then specific ones for each of all of your products.
An example would be:
- Funny baby clothes – General
- Funny baby boots – Specific
3. Use Both Spellings Of Words
UK and American English sometimes spell the same words differently.
Since Etsy is global, make sure you hit on both of them for maximum exposure so you won’t leave any traffic on the table.
4. Check Etsy For Those Keywords
The competition on Google words won’t be the exact same as on Etsy.
The purpose of the Google search was to help you determine what people actually search when they’re looking for a product similar to yours.
By applying these keywords and then searching the competition on Etsy, you’ll know how fierce the actual competition on Etsy will be.
You’ll also want to see how many stars and rankings your competition has.
The more stars and ratings they have, the harder it will be for you to compete.
5. Renew your listings often
72.92% of the listings on the first page of Etsy search have been renewed within the last 7 days.
If you’re waiting 4 months for your listings to expire before you renew them than you’re missing out on a lot of traffic.
You can use tools like Etsy On Sale to schedule your listings to automatically renew.

6. Fill Up The Descriptions
If you have a lot of relevant keywords you can use, then it’s worth filling up the titles and descriptions with as many as possible.
Adding descriptors like boy, girl, baby, babies, boys, girls, all of it will help because many people search in different ways.
You want to use the different alliterations and google keyword planner will help you be creative in what you’re trying to do.
People are having success with Etsy and hard work will get you where you need to be.
